Just stumbled across this...
Was this Welsley geeza pulling legs, or what?
Honestly, if anyone saw those pictures in isolation, would they even entertain the merest possibility of thinking that was anything other than a plain old domestic/feral cat?
Steve Wroe did an admirable job of holding back a chuckle... :-)
Mike.

Poor Steve? At least he got his head on the telly! :-)
Also, I may be missing something, but is this Rex Gilroy chap well known for his 'research'?
Cheers,
Mike.

With all due respect, full credit to Wesley Kissell for reporting it. He cannot be blamed for not recognising an uncommon breed of cat and I'd rather have 100 misidentifications reported for the sake of 1 genuinely unknown creature.
I don't know how it made the news, but again - there's no shame in Mr Kissell asking the question - "what was this that I photographed?"
Cheers,
Chris.

(and I might add I've sent photos of really common spiders to international experts for identification )

Certainly no harm in asking the question. the harm is all in the stupid TV spot and the reaction of the "expert" (not Steve Wroe btw).

Interestingly, the media (TV and print) were well aware beforehand that the cat was a domestic devon rex, nothing more, yet they proceeded to report and showcase it as being a 'panther-like' animal. As Chris says, it's not Wesley's fault he didn't know what it was, but it was a gross (but laughable) over reaction all round. A similar cat breed was photographed and featured in a nearby regional paper years earlier and also earned the panther moniker. God knows what they'd think if they saw a Bengal cat or similar loping past the letterbox - probably the same thing! Ruby
