I have received several reliable reports of sightings over the years, not just from Gippsland but also from the Brisbane Ranges south of Ballarat and from the Pyrenees/Grampians areas. These have come from reliable, mature people who have had a good view. I have not received any very recent reports and believe that like the quolls these things have been forced to move deeper into the bush to avoid human contact.

As a Gippslander who has spoken to many people who have seen thylacines at Loch Sport, Golden Beach, Briagolong and down in South Gippsland, I can confirm I have not heard of a sighting for more than a decade. My theory is that 1080 baiting with Fox-off and similar by the Department of Many Names has virtually wiped them out. It certainly had a serious impact on the huge goannas who got secondary poisoning from scavanging on carcases of foxes etc. Many of the thylacine sightings reported the animals scavaging on road kill so theoretically they could be poisoned initially by digging up the Fox-off baits and then as a secondary by feeding on primary victims.

60 Minutes did a piece on it earlier this month. All the usual stuff and some familiar names. We all sure would like the Thylacine still to be around ...
