The entire island is a BIG earthquake waiting to happen. One o'these days .. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macquarie_Fault_Zone#EarthquakesMost of the research station's buildings are situated on an isthmus, virtually at sea level. They'd be obliterated by even a modest sized tsunami. The SE coast of mainland Australia and Tasmania are directly in the firing line when, some day, a seriously big quake sets off a mega-tsunami. 🌊

Macquarie Island and New Zealand both sit on the plate boundary and a large movement could swallow them both or split or expand them. Totally unstable and prone to disaster.

Are you not in Melbourne? Does that not put you in the firing line? Have you conducted any tsunami drills?

Well, the next door neighbours have a humongously gigantic tree in their backyard. Which I have no doubt I would be able to climb. 🌳 In case of, you know .. "worst case scenario" 🌊

Unlikely to reach 170 Km inland to me and would have to be over 250 Metres high, even then I can easily go up another 50 metres by just going up the hill. With Ballarat south of us being 800 metres above sea level we should be safe from oceans. Earthquakes are rare and our local volcanoes are extinct or dormant, only asteroids could pose a problem, we are not worth wasting a nuke the population is too sparse and spread out. They joy of being in the electorate of Mallee, we used to be classed as Wimmera but so many retirees moved to Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Portland that they redrew the boundaries.
