'A former Australian politician "sold out" the country to a foreign spy network ..'
Don't know why our spy boss is speaking in the singular. There's a very long list of known traitors among our political "leaders".
The CCP appears to get straight to the point when recruiting spies: it's $$$$s up front 🫰. ASIO often warns about Chinese recruiters "working" LinkedIn and I know they sound out Aussie engineering students in final year view "help" with HECS debts. They especially zero in on about-to-graduate engineers who let slip an interest in Defence - view long term "relationship", no doubt. Their technique is nothing like the old Soviet softly-softly methods of recruitment. Back in the hey-day of Communist ideology, Russian "spotters" could appeal to a prospect's "better angels": think of the glorious Socialist Future, comrade! And you have to admit, they had much success. Thinking of the Cambridge Five, the Los Alamos spies et al.
