With ancestors who were ship builders and a couple of good friends who were merchant sailors and several of Dad's engineering mates were also ships engineers I have been off on a fair few merchant ships and some of them were at best sloppy. Amateur yachties probably run a tighter ship than many, but they say familiarity breeds contempt. Naval vessels are much better because they need to be kept in a state of readiness, whether for battle or rescue work, they are generally much better maintained; if you are just an ocean going delivery driver you do the minimum to keep sailing and earning $$$$.
