'Big cat' cops check on dead goat
Oct 28, 2005 Western Mail - Wales, UK POLICE were last trying to establish whether the death of a goat near woodland is linked to reports of a big cat roaming the area.
South Wales Police officers are investigating the discovery of a dead goat in the Baglan area of Port Talbot.
The animal was found near woodland - where there have also previously been unconfirmed sightings of a large cat by members of the public.
The goat was buried by its owner, but will be exhumed so experts can determine how it died.
A police spokesman said, "Over the years in this area there have been lots of reports of sightings of a large cat."
Superintendent Cliff Filer, divisional commander for Neath Port Talbot, said, "We would ask the public to be vigilant and report any sightings of a large cat to us immediately. In view of all the previous reported sightings and the significant nature of the wounds to the goat, arrangements have been made to exhume the carcass to establish how it died.
"Until the full circumstances of the incident are known we are making contingencies to deal with any potential further incidents."

Wales is proving to be a hotbed for big cat sightings of late, as are the unconfirmed reports of wild Wolverines in the area. Parts of Wales are still very wild, and many exotics could hide in these areas untroubled. Big cats are in the UK, despite captures, road kills etc, the government remained tightlipped, but the truth is getting nearer.

Case closed on 'big cat' goat Nov 2 2005 icWales Police have been unable to complete tests on the body of a goat whose death was linked to sightings of a big cat roaming in the area.
The animal was found near woodland in the Baglan area of Port Talbot where there have been unconfirmed sightings of a large cat, and the nature of the its injuries sparked an investigation.
The goat was buried by its owner, but was exhumed by police to determine how it died.
But today South Wales Police said the goat’s body was too badly decomposed to run proper tests and it has now been reburied.
A spokesman said: “That is the end of the investigation. The possibility still remains of a big cat but we will probably never know. There have been no sightings in the area since the goat’s death but we would urge people to report any sightings.”
