Interesting article in today's Age newspaper about the possum invasion. We always knew possums do well in suburbia but they seem to be doing extra well of late. If people think Ringtails and Common Brushies are a nuisance, just wait till the Southern Bobuck aka The Mountain Possum aka the Black Possum arrives in the 'burbs!
Bobucks are bigger and heavier than either of their cousins, so presumably they could do that much more damage if they got loose under your roof. The Bobuck Survey seemed to show they're on the move, big time. Heh, and heading Melbourne's way ...
Not all Aussie marsups are threatened by foxes and cats and dogs. Our cameras hardly ever saw foxes and Bobucks in the one place, yet Bobucks live mostly on the ground, where foxes are. We reckon these guys might have have fox for breakfast.

People complain that possums eat roses and parsley and fruit off trees. They leave droppings in the driveway. They thump and squeal in the roof, and start dogs barking. But they're protected and everyone is supposed to love them. "People and possums can live together successfully," chirps the Department of Sustainability and Environment's website. Many suburban dwellers aren't so sure.

One of the worst-affected areas is the City of Monash in Melbourne's south-east, where possums are in "plague proportions", according to Mayor Paul Klisaris. The council receives more than 400 calls each year from residents wanting possums removed.
