Yeah, I guess a certain yearning for comforting answers keeps these quaint little homilies churning out, year after year. Of course there are scientists who believe in god. Just as there are - or were - Catholic Marxists. You will always find contrarians at the fringes.
It's interesting that most of the scientists who do espouse a religious view of evolution are in fact physical scientists - a chemist, a physicist and a mathematician are quoted here. Persons with that sort of background do have a tendency to confuse the origin of the universe (unknown) with the evolution of life on Earth (known). Everyone's entitled to their views, even when there is no evidence to base their views upon. I recommend they read Ernst Mayr's "What is Evolution". The late Stephen Jay Gould was of course a US citizen and I think a scientist and writer in that country would do well to throw a sop to religious fundamentalists.
The fact is, religion does make claims about the physical and living worlds around us. Those claims are within the purview of science and can therefore be tested. So far, they have been found wanting, unfortunately.
This leaves us with a bit of a dilemma: if all religious scholarship, writings and beliefs, past and present, are simply wrong, it starts to look as if we really are on this rock entirely on our own. What are we to do?
I personally found the implications of Darwin's ideas to be totally, utterly unsettling, when I first began to understand. As did Darwin himself and everyone ever since who has read and understood his works.

True science has an open mind to any theory. Theories are debated and tested and based on the balance of probability/and statistical analysis they stand or fall. Unfortunately the inclusion of god has never succeed to stand up to the basics of scientific metrics. It hasn't to date, and until such time that it does...then just becasue a mathemetician stands on a soap box still doesn't add up to an answer. Sure a possibility but that is only an opinion.....It aint based on science.
In my opinion reasoning and justification purely on the basis of the magnitude and scope of the universe, doesn't mean an increased chance of god. God may well exist, but to date it aint science and to date it is no more then one persons religious orientation compared to anothers. Anyway i still wear the face of Jesus around my neck, which I cling to in times of need.......but that has nothing to do with science, more to do with my insecurity, my ancestry and the social environment I was raised in. Theologists get your personal god billboards out of the face of science, if your god is there science will find it. You can rest assured enough people are focused on it.
Um Um Prof John Lenox of mathematics fails in his close as all others have that slide their God card into the science deck. I refer to his Quote"It remains a mystery to me why some people claim it is their intelligence that leads them to prefer the first to the second". To Prof Lenox it is not their intelligence...it is infact science why they prefer the first and what he likely discards.
