After a 102 year absence (!) a female ground parrot was rescued by WIRES volunteers from Malabar, Sydney, in 2006. Discussion ensued about where it came from and what to do with it. Now, the seemingly unthinkable has happened - a credible sighting of a second ground parrot in the wild in Sydney. Click through to read the full story on the 2006 discovery, follow up surveys and the latest sighting, just 3 weeks ago. www.wherelightmeetsdark.com/index.php?module=wiki&page=GroundParrot

It's curious. Quite a few native animals seem to be showing up outside their normal haunts. We've seen Pied Currawongs in Melbourne these last few weeks. They're mountain bird that live above the snowline usually. Figures. The Weather Bureau says we're heading for the coldest winter in 10 years. Anyone else noticed birds/animals "coming in from the cold" of late?

A Pied Currawong knocks on our living room windows every other morning Pretty common in Sydney - not so cold here.

Yeah, I've noticed Currawongs in the SE suburbs of Melbourne too... I heard a call and thought "It couldn't be..." but it was!

I saw a grey butcher bird in Maryborough, very rare in this area. I had to look twice but it did not seem to settling in just passing through. The fact sheet says they do live in suburban areas but inland prefer heavy forest. www.austmus.gov.au/factsheets/grey_butcherbird.htm

... Figures. The Weather Bureau says we're heading for the coldest winter in 10 years. Anyone else noticed birds/animals "coming in from the cold" of late? I don't know when the cold is going to arrive but we seem to have been experiencing 18-20 every day, some mornings have been cold (frosty) but it hasn't killed the tomatoes I picked more this morning but ripening has slowed I am picking them half green and ripening them indoors.
