There is actually a roo in the video, that hops off as the critter walks past. The critter didn't seem that interested in the roo and the roo wasn't too scared, since it let the creature get within 15-20(?) meters of it... Funny you mention that. I saw that too, only my analogy was a golden retriever and a rabbit. (A little smaller.)

It's also very hard to tell how big the roo/wallaby is and how far away from the creature it is.
To me the white creature appears to walk rather 'stiffly', nothing like a big cat
It also appears to have fur/hair that is rather long, almost touching the ground? That's one of the things that leads me to think "goat"...

I didn't realise that the soundtrack was not made at the same time as the video, I assumed that the people making the clip were commenting on what they were seeing and in that case I could not imagine someone seeing a goat and mistaking it for a lion. If the sound is from someone watching the clip then it could be anything, a case for being accurate with what we report and not letting wishful thinking get in the way of serious research.

The soundtrack was made later?
Really? It sounds to me like it's 'live'... How did you discover that little bit of info?
Hard to imagine that anyone watching that video on the telly (and recording the audio track) would think it was a lion... Unless it was a deliberate scam...

It does to me too, but I may have misunderstood something but I thought it was being implied from the re-recording comments.
I don't see how anyone on the spot could mistake a goat for a lion. Shame they didn't have a decent zoom or the courage to approach it, the 'roo wasn't scared so it obviously wasn't hunting. You often see this in African footage where animals ignore predators that are just walking around. I have a 22X optical zoom and 200X digital (but that gets pixilated at high range) and from the distance of this footage I could have looked him in the eye.

Wally - don't be upset... the discussion's good.
There are a number of pieces of evidence to this sighting - the video footage is one, and the "backstory" - or witness testimony, is another.
The critical analysis being employed is simply because skeptics will want *proof*, and not just evidence. Unfortunately, the testimony is often ignored by the skeptic, leaving us with trying to prove the case for big cats using what other evidence we have left.
I think it is completely understandable that it is difficult to get good quality evidence, and just because it's poor quality does not proove there are big cats, doesn't mean it has been hoaxed or it's a scam.
I think this critique is a natural part of the process, and ultimately, it doesn't matter what thoughts we post on this forum - either that was or it wasn't a big cat; we're just saying we can't proove it from that film.
Chris.

Yeah Wally, don't take it to heart...
It's just healthy scepticism! Where would we be without that, eh?
We'd all be believing that faeries, goblins and pixies are living at the bottom of our gardens! Actually, that's not a bad thing... :-)
You're one of the most respected (not to mention prolific!) posters on this site and ALL of your contributions, comments and yarns are greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Mike.

Just resurrecting this old post, after having a good look at the video again...
I'm now 99% convinced it is indeed a feral billy goat. A few things sealed it for me:
1: The overall shape is more goat than lion. 2: The stance while walking is 'head-up', which is very unlike a lion. 3: The short steps, rather than the smooth stroll of a lion. 4: At one point the animal appears to stop and turn its head, at which point you can see the goat-like shape and the actual horns..
Bear in mind that even the 'high quality' version of the clip is still far from perfect, which is why I'm only 99% sure :-)
Cheers,
Mike.

Oh come on now, surley the people looking on would know a billygoat from a tiger. Dennis admits that once at first glance he took an aust bigcat for a goat on account of length of leg, he then got a look at the head. Cheers BC

After seeing and hearing many peoples opinions on creatures they aren't able to readily identify, I always take any excited exclamations with half a pound of salt :-) Quick/initial glances can often confuse, but in this case we have a video clip, which I've watch over (and over and over again)... I'd put money on a large, white male goat... Something like this - but obviously still kickin' nhill.ezyzine.com/ThreadView.aspx?tid=6846

Here's the link if anybody is interested in seeing the film:
Looks more like a goat to me, but the footage is too grainy to make out anything definitive. But if it was a lion, it would have to be a white lion. And since they are not native it would have to have been brought here. But white lions were so valuable back then (and still are) that it is ludicrous that anybody would just simply release such a valuable animal. Alternatively, if it was born here then there must be a breeding population of P. l. krugeri, but we would know about it. And if it was an escaped animal, they would have known about it; white lions aren't exactly ordinary animals.

In the late 70s or early 80s circus animals were beeing taken from SA to Qld. Near Olary in N SA along the Broken Hill road a cage trailer came adrift and was partly wrecked allowing a lioness with cubs to escape. Also a jaguar escaped. The jaguar was never seen again and the lioness was shot by police about 2 years later. It had been shot at previously by a rabbit shooter and apparently was a bit sick. 2 cubs were captured and 2 were shot by a kangaroo shooter. By chance a friend with a camel ride buisness met an elderly ex circus hand who said that he was concerned with the roll over and fixing up the mess. He stated that the cubs were hybrids with a tiger father. About 10 years after the accident and escape This large whitish feline was seen and videoed by workers cleaning up the old Radium Hill township site. By a strange quirk of fate Ashtons had 2 hybrid cubs born and were bottle reared at the time of the Olary accident. At this time the other circus mob had 2 orphaned hybrid cubs on their hands. These 2 animals spent the last of their days in a zoo. No imformation was spread about this accident and escape, and eventually some publicity came out about Broken Hill police shooting a lioness. But where the lioness came from was hush hush. I had the person who fixed up the cage, come to work with me, in the mid 80s and I eventually pumped the story out of him . To say that the sound track was added later is bunkum. The disc is as it was when I received it from the Adelaide museum, who received it from the person who made the video, I certainly never fiddled it and I'm certain no body else woulld bother. BC

The Ashton cubs grew to maturity and spent their later life in a zoo. Nothing was ever heard of the other cubs. BC
