For the last 12 months I have had a clip of this critter on disc. Recently I sent a copy to thylacoleo.com for perusal and I hope featuring. Been indulging in some heavy thoughtfest on the matter and was brooding over 4 old African lions that were bushed near Broken Hill, one was shot by local policeman and another by rooshooter as it was eating a sheep. (The cat eating sheep) All this must have happened either when I was in that country early 1960s, or I heard it later. A retired circus hand was talking to the camel man about 2002 and mentioned my infomation re the 2 lions. The retired C/H then told him that 4 lions had been bushed. Thhe CH asked where he had got his info and he said, "Wally Davies".the mans answer was, "Is that old +++ still going". Anyway re the RH tiger the oversound as the pic was being taken went thus. " What is it ? looks like a bloody lion or tiger... a bloody tiger loose in the bush". The animal was big and whitish. I got wind of a lion being shot near Olary SA on the Broken Hill road, getting near the border. In 85 I had the railway line repair gang at Leigh Creek and a fellow came to work in the gang, coming from Olary. I tried to pump him for info but he wasnt sayin nothin. I fed him with a bit more of what I knew and he said. '"Seeing you know so much I will tell you the rest. A fellow did the Danial act at a lion park near Adelaide, alas the lord was not with him and he reached a foregone finale. The city fathers in their benign wisdom banished the lion park into the wilderness of Queensland, but at Olary a cage came to grief and animals escaped. A jaguar got away and was seen no more. A lioness had a litter of cubs that were Tiger hybrids, 4 were mentioned. The railway man did some rabbit and roo shooting on the side at night and mentioned to the local station owner that he had a mighty big dog loose on the place judging from the footprints that were found. Of the cubs 2 were recovered and a roo shooter shot 2. The lioness was seen one night and a shot was"put into it". (If it grows cut it down, if it moves shoot it). Some days later the lioness was seen to enter a road culvert so Highway workers drove machines up and blocked the animal in. It was shot by police from Broken Hill. So endeth that chapter....or does it. The animal recorded was big and almost white. It does not move like a bigcat with the undulating body movement, it is upright and strides along. Supposing there were actually 5 of these juvenile critters and 1 was not accounted for and grew to adult hood in the vastness of that semi desert country. The video was taken mid 90s, and supposing the animal escaped mid 80s that would make it about 10 years old, when the video was taken with a possible 5 years life left in it Now I wonder did a hybrid cub survive and possibly teamed up wiith the jag and is actually still living in that country. At the moment I have a blown up disc burner that crashes my PC if I try to use the burner. The thlot pickens Wally

Interesting story Wally... I'd love to see the video. I don't know whether lions, ligers or tigons can mate with jaguars.
I need to refresh my memory - if the mother was a lion and the father a tiger then are the offspring tigons or ligers? And regardless, I just want to know: are they the massive or diminutive form? If the diminutive, then they stand a chance at remaining undetected.
However, if they say 4 escaped and then they accounted for 4, I don't think you can go wondering whether it was really 5.
But the leopard would still be out there (in mid 80s).
Meanwhile, here's an oldie but a goodie...
A wealthy man decided to go on a safari in Africa. He took his faithful pet dog along for company. One day the dog starts chasing butterflies and before long he discovers that he is lost. So, wandering about he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the obvious intention of having lunch.
The dog thinks, "Boy, I'm in deep doo doo now."
Then he noticed some bones on the ground close by, and immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat.
Just as the leopard is about to leap, the dog exclaims loudly, "Man, that was one delicious leopard. I wonder if there are any more around here?"
Hearing this the leopard halts his attack in mid stride, as a look of terror comes over him, and slinks away into the trees. "Whew", says the leopard. "That was close. That dog nearly had me."
Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So, off he goes.
But the dog saw him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figured that something must be up.
The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard.
The cat is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine."
Now the dog sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back, and thinks," What am I going to do now?"
But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers pretending he hasn't seen them yet.
And just when they get close enough to hear, the dog says, "Where's that monkey. I just can never trust him. I sent him off half an hour ago to bring me another leopard, and he's still not back!!"

If you were under circumstances like this when one was not accounted for and four were, what would you say? ? I am only assuming that the assumed 5th cub teamed up with the leopard. The fact was there was a mighty big catlikke whitish animal on the loose when the pic was taken, and pics I have seen of these hybrids shows them to be a whitish colour. Cheers Wally

Hi Wally,
Regarding your PC and it's CD/DVD burner issues; I'm assuming you have this video clip (and others?) saved on the hard disk in your PC.
Wouldn't it be possible for you to email someone the video files in whatever format they currently are (.mpg, .avi, .mov, .vob), so we could look at them now?
Cheers,
Mike.

I stated on my first post that I have sent a copy disc to thylacoleo dot com. Debbie should have it by now. The other animal was a jag, not leopard as I said on my 2nd post A copy is on HD in my spare PC, When time permits I can burn copies and hand out a limited number per snailmail. I have a limited budget on my Email I have stated the true facts concerning this case and there is no more to add. The mother was a lioness as stated on my first post. The aanimal in the pic is a mighty big beast and was iassumed to be a tiger by the witnesses Wally

Hey Debbie - any chance of a shufty at Wally's video?
Perhaps you could rip/convert it to an .avi and put it up on the site somewhere?
Cheers,
Mike.

I have not had much luck copying discs of this critter. I can play them OK but no one else can. Puddles the guru is coming next Thursday so I will see what he can do. I would use my external burner on my PC1 if its internal burner was working to instal the softwear but then if the internal burner was working I wouldnt need the external. Some more hair left in a snare in NE Vic arrived so I have sent some for a second opinion. I am still held up for a description of the medulla lattice for thylacine to compare with that of the specimen. Also I have received dog hair from the Big Desert, an examination of this specimen should give an indication if I am right in identifying these mutts as New Guinea Singing Dog. I also received quite a few copies of photographs of mostly dead dogs but a couple show the live animal still in the trap. I can now do some more with my write up on this critter. Wally

You guys who are having trouble copying disks there is a program called "Clone -CD/DVD" that seems to work on all formats, it ignores content commands and simply duplicates a disk, a real pirate's dream. I don't know if any search engines can source it but worth a look. A son in law had a copy I will ask if he still has a current version.
It looks as though the Quest has been active while I have been busy, we lost a son in law at the weekend (only 38) and the funeral was today so things have been a little neglected around our place.

Dennis, my thoughts and prayers are wiith you. Molloch I take it the hair referred to is thylacine, that is all we need for a positive identification. Besides a number of pics of wild dogs taken in the Big Desert, I received a quantity of hair, I have asked for some singing dog hair from my overseas contacts for comparison. Otherwise I will ask for pics and description of the medulla lattice, So far I read that SD hair is banded. Wally

Thanks Doc, the wife and I were talking about it and we were saying how fortunate we have been with ten kids and thirty grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all their partners our clan is now about 80 souls and there have been no physical or mental defects and only two have died young. The Almighty has certainly smiled on our little family, at 80 souls some might think he laughed out loud.

A lot of them have moved to other towns to work or run businesses and we have kids in Perth and Cairns (really great for free holidays). We do have a Wright Street as well as streets named for other relatives like Harris, Gillies, Lowenstein, etc.

Hmm... Just had a look at the original capture (720x576 video grab) of the Radium Hill footage (thanks Wally!)... The resolution is better than the copy on YouTube, but it's still very hard to make anything definite out... D'you know what my first thoughts were? A feral goat... Sounds weird, I know... The colour and size is right and I'd say there are goats up that way. But the people taking the video seemed convinced it's a lion... As I said it is hard to see much detail, but I can't see any signs of a long, curved tail. Then again, the creature in the vid does resemble this too... It's a tricky one... And any predator that stands out as much as that critter would last long - prey would see it a mile off... There is actually a roo in the video, that hops off as the critter walks past. The critter didn't seem that interested in the roo and the roo wasn't too scared, since it let the creature get within 15-20(?) meters of it... HMMMmmm... Cheers, Mike.
