Here's an interesting snippet. It appears Plutonium batteries have a long history. Like most technologies we use everyday, this one too originated in the wars of the 20th century ... I presume they'd be thermoelectric batteries, ancestors of the ones that power the Perseverance & Curiosity Mars rovers. I guess you could, conceivably, employ a Stirling engine to generate electricity from the heat of radioactive decay. But moving parts = cumbersome.
