Yo Ray, As usual an interesting photo!! The face definitely looks like a fox, but the rest looks like a jackal? I know that foxes have much longer legs than expected by most people due to coat length, but the brush (tail)is very full for a fox with a coat this short and the positure of the tail is not very fox-like. Maybe your Australian foxes are developing into a new species ?? How did you estimate the size? If you´ve told us the picture was obtained in Africa, I would have said Jackal. An unusual fox by any standard!

There have been foxes like this in Central Vic for ages, I have written about them before. They can ourun anything less than a greyhound or stag, and can outmatch most farm dogs in a scrap. Foxes have been modifying to suit environment, ever since there have been foxes in Aust, eg. the midgets I wrote about. I hope to visit that country again before long so will see if I can check up on the local foxes. I now only have 2 usable rifles. the old ,303 Smelly amd my .35 Whelan BG rifle. Really both are a bit oversize for a fox. Re hounds I once saw a hunter with 2 Afghan hounds in the Wombat Ranges, I dont know if he was hunting wombats or not. BC

Welcome back, Bushcat! Hey, and tell a bit more about short-legged foxes and similar stuff? Actual examples of evolutionary adaptation are of great interest, imho.

Most short tailed dogs are ones who have had their tail docked, a fad which seems to have fortunately almost vanished.
Talking of foxes I saw one in town tonight only a block from home as it ran across the road in front of me I at first thought it was a cat being only as big as a good sized moggie but the colour and the bushy tail twice as long as the body was a give away.
